Billups graduated from George Washington High School in Denver in 1995 where he led the Patriots to two State High School Basketball Championships. He was named a McDonald's High School All-American in 1995 and played for the 1995 U. S. Olympic Festival, winning a gold medal.
After graduating from George Washington, Chauncey attended the University of Colorado where he played for two years under head coach Ricardo Patton. In his first year, he was named Co-Freshman of the Year in the Big 12 after being the only player to rank in the Top 10 of eight league statistical categories. He earned First Team All-Big 12 honors as a sophomore and Second Team All-American recognition by the Associated Press. He started 29 games in his sophomore year a nd led the Buffaloes to thei r first NCAA tournament berth in 28 yea rs.
In his 55 games at CU, Chauncey averaged 18.5 points per game, 5.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
Chauncey was drafted by the Boston Celtics following his sophomore year as the third player taken in the 1997 NBA draft. Boston later traded him to Toronto. He also has spent time with the Denver Nuggets and Orlando before signing with the Detroit Pistons as a free agent in July 2002.
In 2004, Chauncey was named the NBA finals Most Valuable Player, only the second player in NBA history to receive the MVP award before being selected to the NBA All-Star game. In 2005-06, he earned his first selection as an NBA All-Star and scored 15 points and dished out seven assists in the Eastern Conference's 122-120 victory.
In addition to his involvement with the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy, Chauncey has also served as celebrity host for the 21st Annual Celebrity Golf Classic for The Children's Center in Detroit, teamed with fellow Piston Rip Hamilton to host a group of underprivileged children to a shopping spree of the Christmas holidays, and supported the Pistons efforts to open a Reading and Learning Center at Grant Middle School in Detroit during the 2005 NBA Finals.
Chauncey and his wife, Piper, have two daughters.
